STEM Futures Pilot Cohort

STEM Futures PilotProgram

A Saturday STEM Experience for High School Students

The STEM Futures Pilot Cohort is a six-week, Saturday-based program designed to introduce first-generation and underrepresented high school students in Mecklenburg County to STEM education, career pathways, and college opportunities—with a special emphasis on HBCU pathways and workforce readiness.

Through hands-on exposure, mentorship, and college-readiness support, students gain the confidence, knowledge, and encouragement needed to see themselves in STEM futures.

Program Overview

  • Who: 12–15 high school students (Grades 9–12)
  • When: Saturdays | 3 hours per session | 6 weeks
  • Where: Mecklenburg County (community-based location)
  • Cost: Free for students
  • Focus: STEM exposure, mentorship, HBCU pathways, college readiness

Students are nominated by schools and trusted community partners to ensure meaningful participation and support.

What Students Will Experience

STEM Exposure & Career Awareness

Students engage with professionals across STEM fields—engineering, technology, healthcare, and more—to learn how classroom learning connects to real-world careers.

HBCU & Postsecondary Pathways

Participants explore college options, including HBCUs, and learn how high school course choices, preparation, and planning shape future opportunities.

Mentorship & Representation

Students connect with mentors and speakers who reflect their lived experiences and can speak honestly about navigating STEM pathways.

College & Career Readiness

Sessions include guidance on college planning, financial awareness, and building confidence as a first-generation college-bound student.

Why This Program Matters

Many students with talent and curiosity never pursue STEM simply because they lack access, exposure, or encouragement. The STEM Futures Pilot Cohort meets students where they are—early—by providing information, relationships, and opportunities that help close that gap.

This pilot also allows CHFF to build long-term partnerships with schools, colleges, and community organizations while creating a sustainable pathway to future scholarships.
