Who was Dr. Charles Herbert Flowers?

  

  •  Dr. Charles Herbert Flowers, Jr. was born in Wadesboro, North Carolina on August 19, 1918.
  • He attended North Carolina College (now North Carolina A & T State University) in Greensboro, North Carolina.
  • He became the first military-trained Black-American primary flight instructor for the Tuskegee Airmen.
  • In 1947, he graduated from North Carolina College at Durham (now North Carolina Central University) in Durham, North Carolina.
  • In 1947 he also along with fellow pilot Haskell Deaton formed the Haskell-Deaton Flight Service in Charlotte, North Carolina where they taught students separately due to segregation laws.
  • In 1962, Flowers worked with Computer Services Corporation in Maryland. This position landed him at NASA (Goddard Space Center) where he worked for 27 years until retirement.
  • In August 2000, Charles Herbert Flowers High School, a science and technology school, was established in his honor in Prince George County, Maryland.
  • In 2007, he received the Congressional Medal of Honor under President George W. Bush's administration.
  • In 2008, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama.
  • Dr. Flowers passed away on January 28, 2011, at age 92.

Our Story

 Who Are We?
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating the financial burdens associated with higher education.
Our primary target audience comprises individuals, businesses and philanthropic organizations inclined to support the need for accessible education particularly in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
 
 
Our Mission
The core mission of the Charles Herbert Flowers Foundation is to provide financial assistance through scholarships to underrepresented Black American students in STEM disciplines. Through community engagement and fundraising efforts, our goal is to empower the next generation of innovators and leaders in these critical fields.
 
Our Goal
To provide 30 annual scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each to students pursuing higher education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
